What is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift is a procedure done to improve visible signs of aging on the neck and jawline. It is often performed along with other facial procedures such as a facelift or liposuction but can also be done as a stand-alone procedure.
Who is a Candidate?
Individuals who have excess fat and lax skin on the lower face that creates jowls, excess fat deposits under the chin, lax neck skin, or muscle bands (platysmal bands) in the neck can often benefit from a neck lift. Ideal candidates will be healthy, nonsmokers with a positive outlook on their procedure. A consultation with Dr. Chao can help to determine if this procedure is a good match for you.
The Neck Lift Procedure
Depending on the amount of change desired, neck lift choices may include a traditional neck lift or a limited incision neck lift.
A traditional neck lift involves an incision beginning at the hairline and continuing down, around the ear, and ending in the posterior hair. Fat will be redistributed from the jowls and neck, and underlying tissues repositioned, and the platysma (neck muscle) tightened. Skin is then redraped and excess skin trimmed away.
A limited incision neck lift involves incisions only around the ear, which are shorter than those of a traditional neck lift. Results, however, may also be more limited.
Results and Recovery
Following a neck lift, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Drains may also be placed to help collect any excess fluid. Any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Bruising will resolve over the next week, and feelings of tightness or numbness should resolve within several months. Patients can usually see initial results within 4-6 weeks with continued improvement over the course of several months.
