What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light Therapy. This treatment uses high-intensity light energy help improve complexion anywhere on the body. IPL treatment can address the following skin issues:

  • Redness due to capillaries or rosacea
  • Brown spots, age spots, melasma, or freckles
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne scarring
  • Visible spider veins

While IPL is similar to a laser treatment, it is not a laser. Lasers focus just one wavelength of light to the treatment area, whereas IPL releases light of different wavelengths. IPL also focuses on the deeper layers of skin, causing less damage to upper layers.

Who is a Candidate?

Healthy individuals who are looking to improve their complexion can often benefit from IPL treatments. However, those who are prone to developing keloid scars and hyperpigmentation or are pregnant or nursing should not undergo this treatment. A consultation with our team is the best way to determine if this treatment option is right for you.

The Procedure

During the treatment, a special IPL handpiece will focus intense pulsed light down into the dermis of the skin, leaving the upper layers of skin unharmed. Pigment in the skin will absorb this light energy which is then converted to heat, destroying unwanted pigment in the skin. Depending on the size of the treatment area, one session takes about 20-30 minute to complete.

Most individuals require a series of treatments spaced one month apart.

Recovery and Results

There is little to no downtime associated with IPL treatments, which makes this a great treatment option for individuals with busy lifestyles. Redness, swelling, and irritation may occur following treatment but can be reduced by applying cold packs. In the following days, brown spots will first darken and then gradually peel off, revealing clearer, more even skin underneath. Skin texture and overall appearance will continue to improve for months as new collagen production continues in the skin.
